I, like many people, have always struggled in adult life with the state of my ups and downs. The mountainous highs of creativity are invariably followed by the deep valleys of despair and listlessness. One state can’t exist without the other. And both bring something important to life: massive expansiveness of feeling and time to slow down and find peace and strength.

Just as there is night and day, now I try to see these waves of emotion as natural cycles which should be embraced for their counterbalance.

This song, THE PRAYER, was written while living in a dense and dark valley many years ago: I could barely see the sunlight cracking through the canopy as I peered up from the ground.

Now, I’m very proud of it and of the album that it comes from, THE BLACK AND WHITE ALBUM by LOST SOUND CLUB (one of my many compositional monikers).

The album deals with the worst of despair, and yet now it feels like a treasured memento of perseverance.

Its musicians were incredibly kind and giving (among them were @babyfacefinlayson, @simonjasonsmith) and the album’s artwork, which I still love for its typographical mastery, was designed by @denis.ramplin).

All still friends close to my head and heart.

It seems that the light of the NOW can illuminate the darkness of the past: pure magic!

It is an otherworldly experience in the tent - custom-built by Ivan Morison to hold this artwork. The 16mm film and palimpsest soundtrack transport the viewer out to sea.

The score was funded and organised through @cementfields, @morison_studio @superculturewsm and in association with @rnli - to celebrate their 200 years of being the nation’s parent at sea.

‘White Horses’ will then move around the country, visiting the coastal sites that inspired it.

‘White Horses’ is part of a bigger art initiative - ‘Sea Like a Mirror’ cultivated by @cementfields and working with the @rnli to celebrate their 200th Anniversary.

The composition has been funded by @morison_studio and @superculturewsm - and its process - which has been an exciting mix of traditionally scored instruments; tape-loops; glitch-boxes and ambient drones - will be unpacked a little at talks I will be sharing about the process.

I will be releasing six new albums this year.

Amongst the classical, soundscape, big-beat, drone, poetic & commission project albums… I will be releasing a very personal album about my amazing family.

It will be called, ‘WORTH A THOUSAND MYTHS’
And it will be released under my LOST SOUND CLUB moniker.

I tend to avoid the personal stuff on here, and keep it business. But…

Having recently spent some precious time with a lot of my extended family, many of whom are great musicians who play from the heart and soul, I wanted to capture some of that professionally.

I’m prouder of my family than anything. And I love them all dearly. And - amid the lovely and exciting commissions this year - I want to honour them. We get so little time on earth, there’s no time to hold back on love.

This clip is the demo of a song written for one of my cousins as a wedding gift (I bet they’d have preferred a matching china tea set!)

And, more importantly than anything, we wrote and recorded it in about 2 hours just before we set off on a long drive to the wedding in a northern idyll. And my wife and two young daughters learnt, sang, clapped and harmonised on it - very quickly and very joyously! I’m proud of them and, as a quick piece of writing, I’m proud of it - just as I’m proud of the wedding couple and the whole family.

So, tomorrow, back to professional business as usual; but for now… my family are worth a thousand myths!
The full album will be released in the summer - along with LOTS MORE!
